Being a fan of both Stephen King and George Romero, “Creepshow” has always been among my common fear flicks. Campy at times perhaps, but that’s the whole point – to bring a silly book feel to film. And it offers a perfect balance of droll funny apprehension and generous terror, making for a very savory viewing experience if one remembers not to engage it too seriously.

What you secure is 5 mini stories, some of them better than others but all offering plenty of shocks and chills. It opens with “Father’s Day,” where a deceased victim of slay rises from the grave for a nice microscopic Father’s Day surprise. One of the better ones. “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” follows, where Stephen King takes on the lead role as a hillbilly who finds a meteor with a rotten habit of making green hair grow on, well, everything. This one is more comic than scary but detached satisfactory. King does a spacious job as the clumsy and unintelligent-but-likeable Jordy Verrill. Next up is “Something to Tide You Over,” where a vengeful man (Leslie Nielsen) gets even on his cheating wife and her lover (Ted Danson) by burying them both in the sand and letting the tide catch care of the rest. This is my second popular of the bunch. It’s wintry to observe Nielsen choose on the role of the “abominable guy” for a change. Goes to prove his versatility as an actor. Ted Danson is gigantic too. What follows is “The Crate,” in my understanding the best one. It’s also the longest one. Hal Holbrook plays a loser whose foul wife gets what she deserves when he finds a mysterious blood-thirsty creature locked away in an customary crate. This is the darkest and creepiest of the stories. Pure fun, with advantageous acting from everyone. The final myth, “They’re Creeping Up On You,” is the only one I’ve never liked. An eccentric millionare with a roach phobia objective can’t seem to pick up rid of his microscopic crawling friends no matter what he does. Anyone who doesn’t like roaches is advised to skip this one. The final scene will grasp away your appetite for at least a few days.

Now that I’ve talked about the movie itself (easily 5 stars), I have to comment on this sorry excuse for a DVD (0 stars) . This has to be THE worst transfer ever save on DVD. I extinct to believe it couldn’t rep any worse than the first edition single-disc transfer of “Scarface,” but I was putrid. “Creepshow” was achieve on DVD unprejudiced for the sake of putting it on DVD. NO CARE whatsoever was assign into presentation. As another reviewer has mentioned, the movie literally “jumps” throughout the entire time. Grain and those annoying “hairs” appear on the conceal almost every second. The VHS offers better characterize quality; that says a lot. The only bonus feature of this DVD is the trailer, which I enlighten is frosty, but let’s obtain actual. Another slap in the face is the scene selections. The inside of the DVD case advertises 41 scene selections in the “Scene Index” card, but that’s misleading, as the movie only has 21 accurate scene selections. So if you want to recognize one specific scene, 9 times out of 10 you will need to bewitch the *closest* scene to the one you want and ruin up scanning forwards or backwards to earn to the one you really want. Yet another example of a poorly thought-out DVD.

Bottom line: “Creepshow” is a huge cult flick that deserves a Great better DVD. If you have the VHS stick with that. Only accumulate this DVD if you no longer have a VCR or absolutely must occupy all of your movies on the DVD format. “Creepshow 2″ recently got a novel DVD edition that does it justice, so maybe there’s some hope that “Creepshow” will eventually derive the same treatment someday. Until then, we must choose for this lackluster DVD.

How can i ever assert my glee toward this 1982 film? From the first viewing i fell in worship with the timeless alarm classic. This particular entry into the genre is primary for its uncannyand faithful tribute to the 1950’s fear comics (as distributed by EC Publishing), its funny charm, its wonderful effects, and its cult creators (Stephen King and George Romero, and effects by fan fave Tom Savini) . Packed with five stories of the macabre this film is hobble to please fans of dismay as well as kids, adults, and most other moviegoers with its immortal style. The first account provides us with a yarn regarding a cranky traditional man that was murdered by his daughter on Father’s Day because she grew weary of his actions against her. Within lie the mysterious contents of an Artic expedtion…that we all know will only wreak their havoc. The final creepout is slowly presented to us in the originate of an ghastly tycoon with nothing on his mind but money…and getting rid of filthy cockaroaches (or vice versa? ) . Each anecdote is fantastically told and to top it all off we are provided with a wraparound chronicle that introduces the whole chi-bang. This is what fun is all about. No need to assume this serious honest gaze it for the enjoyability factor and you won’t be disappointed. Fans will also gather, mighty to their pleasure, a wide array of bedazzling special effects, oddball lighting, novel characters, and overall friendly direction and storytelling. A certain addition to any sane person’s video library. The dvd version is creepshow at its best. Presented in the best color, relate, and sound ever, don’t fret video buyers because the dvd sports nothing extra that you might be missing. Regardless of the lack of extra features this dvd is a no miss. Acquire it

The merits of this film are sure enough to simply summarize: it is the one and only unique shoestring budget classic. No, the set isn’t novel, but that hasn’t stopped others from picking it up and running with it, sometimes in different directions, and sometimes even more successfully (inspect “Jacob’s Ladder” for a deeper, and darker, purchase) . But I doubt that ANYone ANYwhere has made a better film for less money; as someone below wrote, “”Blair Witch”, eat your heart out.”

And then to have it released on a Criterion DVD, well, it impartial doesn’t procure any better than that! OK, we may not need TWO versions, …. And the second DVD isn’t unbiased a filler: you find anything and everything you could believe of associated with the movie, including “now and then” visits to the film sites, a astronomical hour-long tribute, a history of the film company, stills, probably more than all but the most compulsive fan would want but you won’t feel as though you’ve gotten short-changed! As always, the accurate reason we treasure Criterion is the quality of their prints – they are simply THE BEST you are going to peruse. Anyone who has seen this film on one of its numerous cheapie incarnations on VHS will be tickled with this version – you won’t enjoy how kindly the represent quality is.

I have to say “net this now, before it’s discontinued”. This edition can NOT be bettered; you will NEVER EVER observe a better version of this classic sleeper.

Now, Criterion, when are you going to release Robert Wise’s “The Haunting”, hmmmm?

Carnival of Souls is an faded B-film that you might have seen on ragged Saturday night awe shows. As Herk Harvey (the director) said, this film was shot on a budget that wouldn’t have sustained the opening moments of Abet To The Future. However, this film is able to withhold a creepy and oppressive atmosphere throughout, and that is the major achievement. Even though I knew when every “scary” moment was coming, and I guessed the ending 20 minutes before the film actually ended, that knowledge didn’t extinguish it for me. That’s how strong the movie is, that you can indulge in the film even if you knew everything about it. The acting is stiff and the dialogue is often stilted, but that unprejudiced adds to the uncommon and black atmosphere of the film. And the Criterion release is a steady gem. Two discs, the first has the theatrical release of the film, and the second has the director’s slit. The film looks extraordinary. I’ve yet to eye such an traditional and cheaply made movie perceive so helpful. And the extras are also tall. Documentaries, outtakes, interviews, and oh, that organ music. If you’re a fan of panic, you must bear this film. If you’re a film buff, you must hold it. If you’re a DVD afficionado, you must hold it. If you’re unprejudiced looking for a ample movie to peer on a Saturday night, then please, determine this one. It delivers.

I have always loved the actors in this movie and was NOT disappointed in the movie stars. The tale line was unbiased “okay” and I enjoyed watching it, but it will probably NOT be one of thos movies that I especially ogle again and again. I am a Loyal trouble or castrophe buff. Hit was okay but definately not mammoth.

I may not be the biggest fan of anxiety films, but this movie was even worse than most. The acting is very traditional, and the epic line is honest too former. I would have turned the movie off, if my husband wasn’t one who watches any movie once. I laughed my arrangement through most of it, and finally gave up to read a book. Though the memoir belief may be a valid one and the actors chosen have done tall work, this movie was a major let down. The time would be better spent reading. I hope the book was better.

I had the privilege of watching “Calle 13 Sin Mapa” at HBO’s Recent York International Latino Film Festival. It was a premiere event screening and Rene and Eduardo (Residente y Visitante) were indicate to declare on behalf of this film. This documentary was less about the group as musicians and more about them as human beings. Their advance to filmmaking gives the viewer an inside examine at various communities in Latin America. From a gold mining community, to self-sufficient potato farmers we learn of the Latino diaspora. The group takes us on their personal exploration of Venezuela, Peru and Colombia to expose us the attractive culture that exists in these towns that are not on the plan, thus the name of this documentary. We hear from the indigenous communities what it means to truly be an environmentalist and we learn the legal foundation of music from a free town in Colombia. On a side impress, eye out for a performance by an Afro-Latino as he puts the solar system to song!

All in all, this is a sizable film that I’ve already ordered to add to my personal collection. Not only did I learn more about Latin America, but I learned more about myself. This memoir is about Latin America today, and its a essential lesson in the environmental sciences, sociology and political science.

Finally, I’d like to add that I had the chance to bellow with Eduardo after the screening and he shared with me that this is only the first of a series of documentaries that they are looking to obtain about Latin America. He mentioned to me that the footage of Mexico alone is something to survey forward to, and I will.

I have to be unbiased, even though I am a sizable fan of Calle 13’s music I was a bit tremulous about the quality of this documentary when I first heard about it. I am jubilant to say that the long wait for the release was worth it, as this is a grand better film than I could have hoped for. If you have ever heard a Calle 13 album before then you have a top-notch opinion of what to question from this film in terms of sense of humor, but trust me when I impart you that this is a heart felt gape at several Latin American countries. From visiting a gold mining town in Peru, to indigenous Indians in Columbia, we win a nice (and somewhat intimate) perceive at Latin America that is often overlooked by most of us. My biggest complaint is the length of the film (90 min., not 60 min. as listed by amazon) . I truly wish this was longer, as time goes by so fleet as you are watching it, and you extinguish up with a feeling of wanting to glimpse more. I imagine there was a lot of footage shot to get this documentary, it would have been nice to have gotten some of that footage as extras, but sadly no such luck. In any event, if your a fan of Calle 13 or are Latin (and even if your not) this is definitely worth checking out. 4.5 stars and lets hope we peruse more films from Calle 13 in the future.

Versus is a fun movie, but the pacing leaves something to be desired and I LIKE the slower pacing of Japanese movies. Battlefield Baseball is grand faster attractive and atsui Tak actually gets to act -or at least obtain an expression- in this one. Though I kept wanting to insist him to stand up straight. Posture, honey!

This movie could be described accurately as Shaolin Soccer, but Japanese and about baseball… with zombies and without the deeper character remark. I disfavor comparing movies, but approach ON folks… converse me I didn’t objective nail it good on the head.

There are out-and-out hilarious moments, a random musical or two, some complete silliness and a lot of overacting in this feature… I approve of it ALL entirely! HIGH-LARIOUS! Certainly, those who inquire a ‘real’ movie or try to choose this without a capable sense of humor will not be jubilant. For those of us blessed with humorous bones that don’t finish, this is upright up our alley. Highly recommended! Have fun!

This low-budget baseball zombie comedy is arguably a mixed bag, but one likely to accomplish a enormous cult following. While it successfully pokes fun at the cliches inherent in most sports movies, particularly those `moments’ where people spontaneously applaud the main characters actions (similarly mocked in NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE), it doesn’t bid on the action and gore quotient promised by the thought. The Japanese R2 DVD has English subs and includes a hilariously inventive short film called Ramen Baka Ichidai, about a kid who hunts down the perfect Ramen noodles for his dying grandfather. Primo stuff.

You know those bits of memory from your childhood that pop into your head from time to time and you wish you could relive them?

Bits of this movie were permanently etched into mind since childhood, waiting to be triggered. I vividly lift the opening sequence, the children’s first meditation and the giant headless mannequins. I can’t even remember where or when I first saw it but I recognized the images instantly.

This film resonates with me on a subconscious level. It’s entirely my style. It is the very definition of what I deem to be trustworthy entertainment, and may have even predetermined my interest in sci-fi.

Remember those archaic UNICEF spellbinding shorts? This style of animation always caused an emotional response with me and I didn’t know why until I saw this film again so many years later.

I don’t remove the frontal nudity the first time I saw it, so I guess it was no broad deal.

The notes about the production and the interview of one of the men years later are well worth watching in the special features. So is the recitation, from memory of “The Cremation of Sam McGee.”

Aside from the general warning that this is not for the squemish or oversensitive (particularly women, who capture some hard hits as a species)

If we ever saw Elwood P. Dowd (“Here, let me give you one of my cards”) in a car, the bumper sticker would probably say, “Reality is highly overrated.” The titanic theme of the movie is that reality can be harsh, and that it’s not necessarily a terrible thing to lapse out of it into the fantasies of our fill minds. If Elwood isn’t hazardous and is otherwise normal, who cares if he has an imaginary friend?

Is Harvey genuine? The film leaves that up to our imaginations. And in the demolish, it doesn’t matter if Harvey is a figment of Elwood’s imagination, or a first-rate spirit. It’s the do he has on Elwood that is notable. His presence makes Elwood elated and relaxed, and Elwood makes others jubilant and relaxed — even the hard-boiled head of the psychiatric ward, who lies down on his contain couch and tells his secrets to Elwood.

This actually isn’t too screwballish a comedy — clear, there’s the running joke where Elwood politely introduces Harvey to people he meets. And the scene where Veta is committed is hilarious. But it’s more of a heartwarmer than a comedy, from Elwood softening the lead shrink to Myrtle May finding esteem with a lovable blue-collar worker from the sanatorium.

James Stewart gives a wonderfully dreamy performance, slightly smelling of booze and flowers — his Elwood P. Dowd is mild-mannered, sweet, valiant, courteous, and oh-so-pleasant. And he’s learned the value of unbiased enjoying the cramped things in life, like a flower, a beer or a talk with a friend. And Josephine Hull brings up a colorful performance as his frazzled sister, with several other valid actors rounding off the supporting cast.

Who is crazier — the tickled man with the imaginary rabbit, or the people who want him to be 100% sane and less glad? You effect the call. With a sweet, surreal memoir and a flawless cast “Harvey” is one of those rare movies that does an unspecifiable number on your heartstrings.

Jimmy Stewart is reliable as Elwood P. Dowd, but Josephine Hull steals the exhibit as his totally flustered sister. She is, quite simply, at her wits’ ruin. This is one of only two movies that I know of that feature Hull (the other is “Arsenic and Worn Lace”) . Both are personal favorites, and Hull is marvelous in both. The rest of the cast is also outstanding in this adaptation from a classic Broadway play. Many moments are hilarious, some are touching, and it all adds up to a terrific movie. This witty romp will be welcome in almost anyone’s video library.

one of the nice things about having kids is taking them to the movies. and these two films, an american tail and feivel goes west were positive favorites. we had these two movies on vhs and wore them out. my kids are all teenagers now and probably not as eager in watching these kinds of films as they once were, but i really liked these two films a lot so i kind of bought them for myself! if you have seen them then you know how proper they are. if not and you are searching for something well-behaved for your kids to gawk, then i highly recommend. the record is about the experince of the immagrant coming to america, family and friendship, and the determination to persevere. the narrative and animation is top notch, on par with disney. many of the characters are voiced by celebrated actors, john cleese and dom deluise to name a few. this dvd contains both movies on one disc and even though it would have been nice to recognize them derive the royal treatment that disney lavishes on their films, im calm jubilant to have them. these are five star engaging classics that your children will like and if youre a immense kid then you’ll esteem them too!

Every now and then, a classic character is born. Enter Fivel. In Russia, Fivel’s family is threatened by cats, so they go on a boat that’s poke for America–where there are no cats. The truth is that America has as many cats as Russia did. Fivel gets seperated from his family, who beget that he died. Fivel spends the rest of the movie making fresh friends in America (including a cat) . The first time I saw this movie, I fell in appreciate with it. This is a truly family classic.

Fivel Goes West is one of those rare sequels that’s unbiased as expedient as the first movie–if not better. Fivel and his family head west for a simpler life. But there are cats in the west too.
